Java or Bedrock — which version do I need?

Our server runs Minecraft: Java Edition. Bedrock Edition (the one that comes on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iPhone, iPad, and the Microsoft Store on Windows) can't connect — it's a separate game that happens to share a name. When you install or buy Minecraft, make sure it says “Java Edition” somewhere.

What devices can play Java Edition?

Just Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux machines. Phones, tablets, Xboxes, PlayStations, and Nintendo Switches only run Bedrock and can't join our server. A Chromebook can technically run it with extra setup, but it's rough — a regular laptop or desktop is the path of least resistance.

How do I buy it?

Buy from minecraft.net. It's sold today as “Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC,” which is one purchase (~$30) that includes both versions. You'll need a free Microsoft account for your kid; the Microsoft account's gamertag becomes their Minecraft username. After buying, install the official Minecraft Launcher from minecraft.net, sign in, and pick “Java Edition” from the launcher to play.

What username do I put in the form?

The Minecraft username — the name shown in the launcher and in-game, not their email or real name. It's case sensitive, so type it exactly. If you're not sure, have your kid open the launcher and read it off the top-right corner.

What if they change their username later?

Just text us. The whitelist is tied to the username, so a rename means they get kicked until we re-add the new one. (We can usually turn it around in a few minutes.)
